Drag Boat Races at Creve Coeur Lake, June 20th-21st, 2009

CTYC tent at the drag boat races

What a GREAT IDEA Past Commodore Tim Tighe had! Con Trios participated in the 30th Annual Creve Coeur Classic Drag Boat Races at Creve Coeur Lake. Besides an exciting weekend of racing for the over 100 people from Con Trios Yacht Club we shared our tent with Autism Speaks (the primary charity of the event) where they had games and such for the kids. Thanks to the St. Louis Drag Boat Association for putting us front and center on the water, the banner on the VIP Tent and the VIP tickets for the weekend for our members. Talking to our guests quite a few had never experienced Drag Boat Racing in our backyard. Safe to say most were quite impressed watching boats accelerate to 180 MPH in just a quarter of a mile. We all enjoyed cheering on our Past Commodore John Bicknese's boat "Kwitchabitchin" and his driver, 18 year old Ashly Ruf, daughter of Con Trios members Keith and Terrie Ruf. Ashly is the youngest female driver to be certified in a 180 MPH capsule boat! She did not win her class but she wooped a man in a grudge match after the regular racing, beating him by one hundredth of a second! Posted a few pictures on the "Photo Galleries" page. Will have some more pictures (from Lisa for sure) and more information, check back again.
Many thanks to all that helped set up and take down our tent and tables. Friday it was Past Commodores Gary Meinershagen, Mike Ramirez, Board Members Bill Brueggeman, Mike Baisch, Scott Hickey and myself. Monday Gary, Bill, Mike Baisch and myself were back along with Past Commodores Sonny Robbins and Tim Tighe, Mike's two boys and Con Trios Member Ernie Stolze.

Champagne Brunch 2009 photos are up!

Champagne Brunch 2009 Ice Sculpture

Where do I start Thanking all the wonderful people who helped make the Champagne Brunch such a fun, fun day? All the previous Fleet Captains that set the standard? Darn right! The entire Board of Directors that helped every step of the way, especially on Sunday? Darn right again. My First Mate Maureen for her help all year and putting up with me? Right again. Jon and Kelley at Sundowners? For sure. All of our members and their guests who showed up and helped make the day special? Absolutely, all 206 of them!

An event like the Champagne Brunch and the way everyone pitches in reminds me why I joined Con Trios Yacht Club. Many, many Thanks to all of you. The day began with threatening weather that somehow stayed away from Yacht Club. Sundowners did their usual excellent job with the brunch and setup. Champagne and strawberries were served by all the board members. The "Daves Not Here" band played some awesome music all afternoon. I had way too much fun celebrating my 60th Birthday along with the Champagne Brunch. Pictures are coming in, check out the "Photo Galleries" page. The "Flag Day" theme is very evident in the photos.

Con Trios member Terrie Bert of the boat "Gulliewash" has posted a cool slideshow of his pictures from the Champagne Brunch at:

Check it out, Thanks much Terrie

April Get Together report:

north shore docks

Sun, warm weather and boating season underway helped turn the April Get Together at Oasis Bar and Grill at North Shore Marina into another fun event. Over a hundred enjoyed the appetizers, music by Harold "On The Road Again", good friends and a beautiful view of the water from the deck and Tiki Bar.
Many thanks to Raye Ann and Rob who kept the food and drink going all afternoon. They were well prepared with extra staff, both bars going along with a beer girl!

Some of the more notable ones were eight weekend passes for the Creve Coeur Drag Boat Races compliments of St. Louis Drag Boat Association and Little Johns Motorsports, $25 gift certificate from Oasis, coolers, hats, mugs, shotglasses, t-shirts, keychains and more from our very generous event donors. February 09

February Get Together was a blast, place was packed. After being totally shocked at the terrific turnout in January I could not believe the crowd was even larger and came earlier. Big Muddy had added staff for the day to accomodate us and did a great job at taking care of the over 140 people. They did run out of food near the end but none of us expected such an overwhelming number of fun people showing up. Dan, John, Cindra, Denise, Donna and all the staff deserve a big Thanks. The 50/50 Raffle may have set some sort of record. Thanks to Ruthie's sales skills we gave away a grand prize of 500 along with several other prizes donated by our 2009 donors that Maureen has contacted. Maureen also had several attendance prizes that were given out in a separate drawing. We have a ton of pictures of the festivities Thanks to Lisa Hickey, Mark Miles and Yours Truly. The "Mardis Gras" theme is very evident in the photos, especially the Con Trios Yacht Club beads that were part of the raflle sales (the same beads Ruthie's S.O. Ted had to keep untangling). Lenny Frisch kept his steel drums beating with some very enjoyable music all afternoon. As near as I could tell everyone had as good a time as I did. I know I am going to miss some but Thanks to everyone for all their help! Barb Nelson was there the whole time helping Maureen with Registration, Commodore Denny Galkowski tearing raffle tickets, untangling beads and several others whose names I lost in the fog of the day! When you see the big winners, Bill Tullock and his lovely bride Jean, tell them we're still waiting for that round of drinks. Hope to see you all at the Icebreaker March 27th & 28th.

January Get Together report:
Being a little panic stricken having to follow all the previous Fleet Captains I thought having a simple "Get Together" as our first event would make things a little easier. Didn't matter, I was still worried, hoped we would get at least a few people, maybe 50 or so? Well, about 2:30 on Saturday my First Mate Maureen, who was handling Registrations along with Barb, flagged me down and said "You can relax and have a drink, we are at 51 now!". Made it, over 50 people came.
Eventually we wound up with over a hundred counting the ones that came in after the raffle and food were done. John, Cindra, our waitress (who somehow found me and kept me supplied all day) and all the staff of Big Muddy did their best to keep the food and drinks going. Dan was even working all day keeping things clean and stocked.
Good day, bad day thing for them that Saturday. Another local restaurant had a water main break closing them and their lunch crowd showed up at Big Muddy just before our event was to begin. They handled it all well.
Dan Sprout played a very nice assortment of music, as in I recognized most all of the songs.
Raffle prizes handed out included $250 cash, one nights lodging at Sleep Inn and Suites behind Big Muddy, $25 gift certificate from Big Muddy and a Crown Royal pocket flask with it's own purple bag from my personal collection.
I would like to thank everyone who attended and am looking forward to seeing all of you at next month's Get Together on Saturday, February 28th, 2PM to 6PM, same place, same great time.
Many thanks to all who helped out. Maureen, Barb and Marie with registration, Ronnie helping me count the money, Lisa taking pictures and everyone who helped make our first event of 2009 a lot of fun.
Darryll Weil, Fleet Captain
